Manual therapy is a "hands-on" style of treatment which is used extensively by our physiotherapists here at Sport Physio.

Manual Therapy may include mobilisation and/or manipulation of joints, as well as stretching or massage of soft tissues including muscles and nerve structures.

Manual Therapy is also used in our assessments via the use of palpation of the affected and surrounding areas to feel for any abnormal stiffness, spasm or temperature changes. Manual therapy may involve firm pressure applied by the thumbs or hands of the physiotherapist and occasionally can result in initial post-treatment soreness being experienced by the patient. This post-treatment soreness is short-lived and is usually followed by the longer term benefit of decreased pain and/or increased range of movement.

How Manual Therapy can help you

  • Pain relief
  • Increased joint range of movement
  • Increased soft tissue flexibility
  • Relaxation
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Facilitation of tissue repair
  • Restoration of normal function

This form of treatment may be appropriate for people with any type of pain, particularly in the back or neck, or who have decreased range of movement or stiffness in any joint. Headache may also be successfully treated with manual therapy.
